WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST HEAD SPA TREATMENT (A FIRST-TIMER'S GUIDE)

Trying something new, especially something this slow, this quiet, and this hands-on can feel a little vulnerable. If you're booking your first head spa, you probably have questions. What do you wear? What happens to your hair? Do you talk during the treatment? Will it be awkward?

Here's a calm, honest walk-through of exactly what to expect at your first head spa appointment at Aqua Head Spa in Kelowna, so you can arrive feeling ready instead of unsure.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Booking

You can book online through our website or by texting us at +1 778 821 2951. A 50% deposit is required to secure your appointment. We'll send a confirmation with everything you need to know.

What to wear

Wear whatever you find comfortable. You'll change into a soft gown for the treatment, and we have a private space for you to do so. Skip heavy makeup if you're booking a treatment with a facial component, but don't worry if you forget; it's all part of the cleansing.

Should you wash your hair beforehand?

No. Come as you are. The treatment includes a full scalp cleanse, so there's no need to "prep" beforehand. In fact, treatments often feel even more satisfying when your scalp truly needs a reset.

What about food, water, or caffeine?

A small meal or snack an hour or so before is a good idea. Most guests find they're so relaxed they want to keep that feeling going afterward, so we recommend going easy on caffeine, especially right before your treatment.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE

We recommend arriving about 5 minutes early.

A few things you'll notice:

- The space is warm, dim, and quiet. Many guests describe walking in and immediately feeling their shoulders drop.

- You'll be greeted personally, not handed a clipboard. We take a few minutes to check in about your scalp, your stress levels, and what you're hoping to get out of the experience.

- You'll be invited to change into a gown and settle into the treatment area.

DURING YOUR HEAD SPA TREATMENT

Treatments vary in length (60, 75, 90, or 120 minutes) and depth depending on which service you choose. But here's a general flow of what to expect:

1. A Calming Welcome

Treatments begin with a quiet check-in. You'll change into a comfortable gown, settle onto the treatment bed, and start to soften by the sound of singing bowls before anything technical begins.

2. Scalp Oil Massage and Acupressure

Your practitioner gently assesses your scalp and works through targeted acupressure points with natural scalp oils massaged in with intentional pressure to release tension and prepare the area for deeper care.

3. Warm Water Therapy and Nano Steam

This is the signature moment of a Japanese head spa. Warm water flows over your scalp in slow, steady streams. It's calming, sensory, and surprisingly emotional for many guests. Nano steam helps hydrate the hair and scalp at a deeper level.

4. Detoxification and Scalp Massage

A scalp-focused detox treatment helps lift product buildup, excess oil, and impurities. Deep relaxing hands on scalp massage is one of the most loved stage, because it's the moment most people start to truly let go.

5. Finishing Touches

Treatments typically finish with a neck and shoulder massage and leave in hair mask, leaving you with hair that feels healthier, lighter, cleaner, and more alive than before or a gentle blow dry (upon request), so you leave feeling soft, light, and put-together.

DO YOU HAVE TO TALK DURING THE TREATMENT?

Not at all. Conversation is always welcome, but most guests prefer to drop into silence and rest. Your practitioner will read your energy and follow your lead. There's no awkward small talk required.

WHAT YOU MIGHT FEEL AFTERWARD

Most first-timers describe:

- A "soft" feeling in the body, like everything has slowed down

- A clear, light, breathable scalp

- Hair that feels noticeably cleaner, softer and fuller

- An urge to nap, drink a lot of water, or skip plans you don't really want to be at

- Better sleep that night

- Feeling safe in our space

Some guests get emotional during or after a treatment, which is normal. Slowing down often surfaces what we've been carrying.

AFTERCARE TIPS

- Drink lots of water for the next 24 hours.

- Skip heavy styling products for a day if possible, to let your scalp breathe.

- Try to protect your evening — don't rush back into screens, emails, or noisy plans.

- Notice how your nervous system feels in the next few days; many guests sleep deeper and feel calmer for a week or more.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will my hair be wet when I leave?

We recommend towel dry but we offer a partial blow dry upon request as part of every treatment at no extra cost.

Can I get a head spa if I'm pregnant?

Yes, with some adjustments. We can tailor the pressure, temperature, and products. Please reach out before booking so we can confirm details for your specific situation. We recommend to book your appointment before 36 weeks pregnant so you are still comfortable laying on the table with elevated legs on the foot rest.

Can I get a head spa with hair extensions?

At this time, we don't offer services for guests with hair extensions, to ensure quality of care.

Should I tip?

Gratuity is not included and is graciously appreciated at your discretion.
